CHAPTER 11
BENJAMIN F. AVERY
Plows
Benjamin Franklin Avery was born in 1902 at Aurora, New York. His father, Daniel Avery, of Aurora, New York, had migrated to Groton, Connecticut. Daniel was one of the earliest settlers in Cayuga County and was a farmer and large landowner who represented his district for two terms in Congress. Benjamin was the sixth of fifteen children. He was accepted to Hamilton College but transferred to Union College and graduated in 1822. After studying law, to please his father, he was admitted to the New York City Bar. He hated the profession. He discovered that he had a natural mechanical inclination and decided to devote his life to improving and manufacturing plows.89
Benjamin managed to secure a small factory, and with $400 in his pocket, he took passage on a boat headed for Richmond, Virginia. He went to Clarksville, where he formed a partnership with Caleb H. Richmond and opened his first plow foundry in a pine log cabin. They began business with a single ton of metal, but by industry and frugality, they built up a prosperous business. They continued their business for a few years until the owners of the land refused to rent to them any longer.90
They moved to Milton, North Carolina, where they remained for a few years. Again, they were forced to move and traveled to Virginia, locating their business in Meadville. While there, Avery went into business with Schuyler Bradley, and a year later, they went to Rockbridge County. They remained in business for nine years, with Avery being the leading business manager.91
